On November 22nd WBA junior welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (26-0, 9KOs) successfully defending his title with a dominant unanimous decision victory. The fight took place in Macau, China on the Manny Pacquiao-Chris Algieri pay-per-view undercard.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said that their priority is to match Pacquiao against pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather in the first half of 2015. There are however many obstacles to making that fight and Arum hinted that Vargas is a strong "Plan B" candidate for the Filipino superstar.

The Las Vegas based Vargas said that he's heard the talk and that he hopes to get a shot at what would be his first pay-per-view headlining event.

"Yeah, that's what's being talked about and my manager is working on making that fight happen. I am very happy and hopeful to get this opportunity. It is the opportunity that I have been waiting for and it has come at the right time," said Vargas.

Since signing with Top Rank, Vargas has won a world title, made two HBO appearances and also has appeared on two Pacquiao pay-per-view undercards.  He said that was all part of his reasoning for signing with the promotional outfit. He said a victory over Pacquiao is the next step to accomplish his goal.

"The way I saw it was I will get the opportunities to take out Manny and then become their top fighter. I will be Top Rank's top fighter," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
