Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan is positioning himself to challenge current WBC Junior Middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as a fight with him and Erislandy Lara has been order to go to purse bid. It will be considered a final eliminator according to the WBC with the winner being the mandatory challenger for Alvarez.
Martirosyan appeared on the most recent edition of BoxingScene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab and shared his thoughts on Alvarez, who will be facing former junior welterweight contender Josesito Lopez on September 15th.
“I mean it’s funny to me because De La Hoya has been on Twitter talking about he’s going to make history. The only history I see them making is Canelo should be the 147 pound champion because that’s all he fights. Guys not even in his weight class” said Martirosyan.
“I don’t see this being a win, win for Canelo. It’s a win, win for Josesito 100% because if he loses the fight, he’s a 140 pounder. If Canelo beats him, you beat another 140 pounder. It’s clear the more this is going on, the more people are realizing that obviously they are trying to pick somebody for Canelo to look good against”.
Lopez is coming off the biggest win of his career as he upset Victor Ortiz who was actually slated to fight Alvarez himself had he won the fight. Instead, after weeks of speculation as to who Alvarez would be fighting, it’s Lopez who got the nod. Many fans were disappointed at the choice in opponent as they feel Lopez is too small to move up to 154 after having just barely moved to 147 for his last fight.
While Vanes still has to get through Lara in order to make a fight with him and Alvarez possible, he feels the hard part will be going through Lara and not the actual fight.
“Lara will be much tougher than Canelo. Once I did an interview with BoxingScene and Freddie Roach and they asked Freddie ‘What do you think about Canelo-Vanes’ and Freddie said ‘Vanes will knock him out in one round’. I don’t know if I’ll knock him out in the first round but I know for sure I’ll stop Canelo” predicted Martirosyan.
Martirosyan, as well as other 154 pound fighters in the division, have expressed wanting to fight Alvarez but have not come close to landing the fight. Vanes feels eventually Canelo’s time will run out and there will come a time when he has to take the tough fights.
“I mean, they can’t pick opponents for him all his life. He has to step up and fight somebody someday. And that’s why I respect [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr so much. He finally stepped up and took on Martinez. Hats off to him and Canelo should do the same and fight the best” Martirosyan would tell The Boxing Lab.
Martirosyan is on a mission to fight the best and his road begins with a tough fight against the Cuban sensation Erislandy Lara. The fight is scheduled to go to purse bid July 13th at the request of Golden Boy Promotions.
