Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (32-0) raised some eyebrows when he appeared on The Boxing Lab a few months ago and told us that he felt he would break Erislandy Lara's (17-1-1) ribs with a body shot if they were to meet in the ring.
On this week's edition of BoxingScene's official audio show, Martirosyan said that he made those comments because he wanted to make sure that Lara would agree to face him. Martirosyan has gotten his wish and the two up and upcomers will square off on Saturday in Las Vegas in a fight televised by HBO.
"When I said that I wanted to make sure that Lara would sign for the fight. I had already signed and he hadn't," Martirosyan stated. Shortly after Vanes made those comments Lara appeared on The Boxing Lab and dared the Armenian to try and break his ribs.
"He said what he said because he wants me to fight a certain way but I am going to beat him at his own game. You guys are going to see a different Vanes than you have seen before. I can't wait for the fight," he continued.
The Glendale, Calif. resident doesn't think that Lara has a reliable chin and doesn't expect him to staay in the oocket and trade with him.
"To be honest I don't think he has a really good chin. Most guys I don't watch fights of but I have seen a lot of his fights. Grady Brewer had him almost out in the 4th round of their fight. He's really slick but when you hit him his chin is weak. He doesn't like body shots either," Martirosyan opined.
Martirosyan also gave an analysis of the upcoming clash between Miguel Cotto and Austin Trout. Martirosyan has campaigned for a fight against the Puerto Rican over the past couple of years and faced Trout in the amateurs.
"I don't know (who will win). Austin is a really good boxer but every time we fought in the amateurs I dropped him. If Cotto connects he can drop him but honestly he is a small 154 pounder and he's been hurt at 147 and 40 so you never know. Austin might outbox him."
