At the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas, Edwin Valero (25-0, 25KOs) stopped Antonio Pitalua (46-4, 40KOs) in two rounds to capture the vacant WBC lightweight title. The first time Pitalua was stopped since 1995.

Valero came out with the jab. Pitalua fought back with a combination. Valero fought from a distance and pressed forward with the jab and punches to the body. In the final ten seconds of the round they exchanged some hard power punches.

At the start of the second, a counter right hand sent Pitalua down hard. A few moments later he went down again from a combination. Valero began to batter Pitalua in the corner and the ref jumped in to stop the action.
