WBO cruiserweight champion Aleksandr Usyk (12-0, 10 KOs) admits that he's eventually heading up to the heavyweight division to capture another world title.
Last September in Poland, Usyk won a dominant twelve round decision over Krzysztof G?owacki (26-1, 16 KOs) to capture the WBo world title at the Ergo Arena, with scores of 119-109 117-111 117-111.
Usyk has already retained his title, twice. Last December he battered Thabiso Mchunu (17-3, 11 KOs) on route to a ninth round stoppage win, and then this past April he won a twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Michael Hunter (12-1, 8 KOs).
Two months prior to the fight in April, Usyk announced that he had parted ways with long time trainer James Ali Bashir and replaced him with Vasyl Lomachenko's father and trainer, Anatoly Lomachenko.
Usyk's is promoted by K2 Promotions, which is owned by former heavyweight champions Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.
Also in April, Wladimir was stopped in eleven rounds by Anthony Joshua (19-0, 19 KOs), who in the process unified IBO, IBF, WBA titles before 90,000 fans at Wembley in London.
Both Joshua and Usyk won gold medals at the 2012 Olympic games in London - Usyk at heavyweight and Joshua at super heavyweight. Usyk also won bronze and gold at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships respectively, all in the heavyweight division.
Usyk, 30-years-old, does not want Joshua for the purpose of avenging close friend and promoter Wladimir, but he does want to face him in the next few years.
The cruiserweight champ is looking to make a few more defenses and he's very motivated to unify what is a loaded weight class with a lot of talent. Once those goals are achieved, he wants to head up in weight - and is Joshua is still the heavyweight kingpin, Usyk wants that fight.
"I'm not going to do it for revenge [over Wladimir's defeat], but I do want to fight [Joshua]. I'll be at heavyweight within three years," Usyk said.
