UNBEATEN featherweight prospect Rey Labao is facing another test from a foreign fighter in the main event of card that is part of birthday treat on behalf of Mayor Boyet Gonzales to his constituents on August 26 in Mandaluyong City.
The 5-foot-7 Filipino southpaw will takes on a former two-division Nigerian amateur champion, Bright Isaiah Sunday, in non-title fight.
It will be Labao’s second fight an import. He was successful in his previous trial when he edged former two-time Korean bantamweight champion Sung-Kuk Kim on points in June at Cavite Coliseum in Bacoor, Cavite.
Labao, 22-year old fighter from Paranaque by way of Southern Leyte, is rated No. 2 in the country and top ranked among featherweight under the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific.
The 5-foot-7 southpaw is unscathed in 11 starts with seven by way of short routes in his two-year campaign in the paid ranks under the auspices of Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde Jr., the promoter of the card.
Sunday is a 25-year old orthodox from Owo, Ondo State of Nigeria. He is reported to have piled up 210 wins against 10 loses as amateur campaigner in his country. As a pro, Sunday has 7-0 with 3 knockouts.
Labao wants to use the fight as his final or two tune ups for a possible shot at WBO Asia pacific featherweight title.
The title is currently vacant after its previous holder Terdsak Jandaeng of Thailand fought Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico for the WBO interim featherweight title on August 5 in Stateline, Nevada. Marquez clobbered Jandaeng in round 7.
Jandaeng might be tapped again for the shot at his previous title against the top available contender from the Philippines, such as No. 2 Vinvin Rufino or No. 3 Ruel Mangan. And Labao may fight the winner being the top contender.
