SUPER-FLYWEIGHT hot prospect Paul Butler 3-0 (1 KO) is aiming for the Commonwealth belt before the end of the year ahead of a potential British title shot next summer.
The Great Sutton sensation will have to overcome Hungarian fighter Arpad Vass 3-1 (2) at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, on the undercard of Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew’s world title clash, on October 15th LIVE and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky platform Ch.456).
It will be the ‘Baby Faced Assassin’s’ fifth outing since signing with Frank Warren last September, the 22-year-old was one of the hottest properties on the amateur scene and has carried that form into his first four professional fights.
Yaqub Kareem claimed the vacant Commonwealth title with a seventh round TKO victory over Ghanaian Cobbina Johnson in August and Butler is aiming to challenge the Nigerian after next Saturday’s contest, “Next up after this one will be the Commonwealth title, Kareem from Nigeria has just won that belt so I will be looking to challenge him, then hopefully next summer I can go for the British.”
First up though is 24-year-old Vass over six rounds who on his last appearance lost to Belfast-based boxer Luke Wilton and the Ellesmere Port talent believes that the Hungarian will not pose a threat, “If he (Wilton) can beat him I know I am more than capable. I do not rate Wilton that highly I just need to go out there and get the job done.”
During the preparations to the fight there had been a lot of talk about Butler facing Liverpool fighter Phil Smith but it seems that Smith’s camp is not ready for that just yet, “Training has gone really smoothly I have had some good sparring, there had been some talk of Smith in the build up but that has all gone quiet. We asked about it but they weren’t ready to take it. Whenever he wants to, I will fight him.”
Butler will join the likes of Billy Joe Saunders, Rocky Fielding and Ronnie Heffron on the undercard on October 15th which will feature the exciting world title fight on BoxNation between Cleverly and Bellew.
Butler believes the new boxing channel is great for the sport, “BoxNation is great for boxing. It is a big move by Frank Warren and I am looking forward to being a part of it. Everyone is talking about it at the minute.”
