Yordenis Ugas knows better than to think about an undisputed championship showdown with Terence Crawford without first getting past Errol Spence Jr.

That said, the reigning WBA welterweight titlist believes to have drawn a more favorable matchup for his upcoming fight than the one that potentially waits in the wings.

“I do think that Spence is a better fit for my style,” Ugas told BoxingScene.com and other reporters during a recent virtual media call to discuss his three-belt unification bout. “I will be a little bit different with Terence Crawford, that’s for sure.”

For now, Ugas (27-4, 12KOs) is well aware of the challenge that lies ahead.

The Miami-based titleholder has emerged as a bona fide top three welterweight and coming off a career-best win over legendary former eight-division champ Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39KOs) last August. Still, Ugas enters as a healthy betting underdog in his second title defense versus Spence (27-0, 21KOs), who puts his WBC/IBF belts at stake in their April 16 Showtime Pay-Per-View main event from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Spence is a -450 betting favorite according to bet365 sportsbook to prevail in his third career fight at AT&T Stadium, mere miles from his hometown of Desoto, Texas. Spence attempts the sixth defense of the IBF belt he has held since May 2017 and his second as a unified titlist. Dangling overhead is the suggestion of the winner next facing Crawford (38-0, 29KOs), the current WBO welterweight titlist and promotional free agent whose name has been mentioned in the same breath as Spence ever since his arrival in the division nearly four years ago.

Ugas is keen on next facing Crawford should all go as planned in what is the most significant fight of his career.

“I have to stay focused on this fight,” noted Ugas, not particularly interested in discussing any fight other than with Spence. “This is a tough enough challenge. I can’t think about anything else other than to beat Errol Spence.

“But yes, if God blesses me with a victory on April 16, the goal is to become undisputed champion and to have that fight with Terence Crawford. By no means can I afford to overlook Errol Spence.”
