Mark RobinsonTyson Fury has doubts that a long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua will happen.
The pair have been in discussions for a contest for what seems like an eternity. There was a time when both Fury and Joshua traded jibes in every interview, you couldn’t mention one's name without the other. Despite the constant back-and-forth between the two, the contest has escaped us for nearly a decade.
However, it seems now that Fury-Joshua has never been closer.
Should both men win in their respective warmup bouts this week – Fury in Thailand against Mariusz Wach and Joshua versus Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia – then the pair will finally meet this November.
The contest is probably five years too late, but why has it taken so long to get to this stage?
“Stars haven't aligned, that sort of shit, or it could be that man's a shithouse and he had a couple of opportunities to do it, but pushed a point too much and didn't get what he wanted so then it fell to bits,” Fury told BoxingScene. “I could see this happening all over again.”
When asked if he will be willing on Joshua to defeat Prenga on Saturday, Fury’s answer was simple.
“Let me tell you, if he can't win against Prenga, he wants to forget about boxing,” said Fury. “He struggled against Jake Paul, took him six rounds to get him out of there and couldn't land a punch on him. So, nothing is a foregone conclusion, but if he can't win against Prenga, he ain't winning against anybody.
“Prenga is like what the Americans would call a tomato can. Literally like a hand-picked bum. Without sounding disrespectful to him. He hasn't fought one live opponent. He hasn't fought anybody. Not even someone you can think of who's got a name as a journeyman, even. Nobody. And one of them knocked him out as well.”
