Julio "Baby Face" Garcia (40-3, 34 KOs), the subject of a recent promotional tug-of-war between DRL Promotions and Bobby Bostick Promotions, was upset by Troy Browning (20-0-1, 8 KOs) by way of ten-round majority decision in a junior middleweight contest at the Mahai Temple in Miami, Florida.
Browning, 39-years-old, simply outworked the 20-year-old power puncher from Mexico. Garcia fought like he was 39, and Browning fought like he was 20. What's even more shocking is that Browning, who began his career in 1991, was away from the ring from October 1999 until he decided to return in November 2006.
Garcia, unbeaten since January 2005, and knocked out twelve out of his last thirteen opponents, including Ernesto Zepada and Grover Wiley, was the third fight of Browning's comeback. Garcia has struggled with weight issues for several years as his body is naturally getting bigger with age. He planned to become a top welterweight, but his inability to get down to 147 forced him to fight several bouts above 150-pounds. He was fighting at 140-pounds less than two years ago.
The scores were 96-94, 97-93 and 95-95.
