The thunderous sounds of leather meeting flesh resonated throughout the Activities Center in Maywood, California on Friday night.
In the main event of Telefutura’s televised taping, an animated crowd saw Fernando Trejo pound out a unanimous decision victory to capture the vacant NABF Super Featherweight title.
Trejo 26-10-4 (17 KO’s) out slugged Tijuana native Luis Arceo 19-4-2 (13 KO’s) for much of the twelve round bout.
Early on Arceo expended much of his energy by aggressively pursuing Trejo. However, Arceo’s speed and aggressiveness wasn’t enough to seize the victory on the judge’s scorecards.
Trejo used his ring generalship to play cat and mouse with Arceo and drew him into flurried exchanges by playing possum.
The official scores were 117-111, 116-112 and 115-112.
The co-main event pitted undefeated Azteca Boxing Club product Giovanni Segura against flyweight Francisco Arce.
Segura 13-0-1 (10 KO’s) ended the fight at 2:59 of the first round when he hit Arce with a thunderous straight left hand.
Arce 20-3-1 (9KO’s), the younger brother of world champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce fell two more times before the referee’s count of ten.
On the undercard Sergio Mendez 3-0 (1 KO) scored a unanimous decision win over Jose “Tiger” Lazaro. All three judges scored the 4-round Super Bantamweight fight 40-36. Lazaro’s record drops to 1-7-1.
Super Featherweight prospect Brandon Rios remained undefeated with a Technical Knockout victory over Freddy Castro 3-13-5 (2 KO’s). The fight came to an end at 1:05 of the 3rd round when Rios 10-0 (7 KO’s) dropped Castro with a left hook and body combination.
In his pro debut, Carlos Martinez defeated Alejandro Arteaga in a Super Lightweight contest. The opening minute resembled a street fight with Arteaga (2-1) throwing wild flurries. However, Martinez 1-0 (1 KO) landed an overhand right to end the fight at 1:45 of the first round.
Undefeated Mini Flyweight Austreberto Juarez improved his record to 7-0 (2 KO’s) with a unanimous decision victory over Benito Abraham 9-10-3 (6 KO’s). All three judges were in agreement with scores of 40-35.
In a four-round Middleweight bout, 2004 Mexican Olympian Alfredo Argulo 4-0 (1 KO) defeated journeyman Manuel Mada.
