Musician Travis Barker is a big fan of boxing. One of his good friends is retired pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
This past weekend, Barker came out to support Mayweather's charity basketball game. Prior to the game, Barker discussed some of the current topics in boxing.
Mayweather (49-0, 26KOs) retired back in September and promised to stay away for good. Barker would like to see him fight again, and the opponent he'd like to see him in the ring with is WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).
Golovkin, for a fight with Mayweather, is willing to drop down as low as 154-pounds.
Barker sees Mayweather being too good and too defensive for Golovkin.
"I think he has a couple more in him. For me, I want to see that Triple G fight. That's what I want to see," Barker told BoxingScene.com. "[If they fight] I'm all for Mayweather to keep that squeaky clean record."
"Floyd is a smart fighter. Of course if you go and bang with Triple G, anything can happen. But Mayweather is a very smart fighter. The goal is not to get hit and beat up all the time. The goal is to hit your opponent as many times as possible and not get hit, and Mayweather does that all the time. I’m not one of the people who critiques his fighting. I think he’s smart and a great fighter."
While Mayweather-Golovkin is very unlikely at this point, the more realistic fight is a middleweight unification between Golovkin and WBC champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for next fall. If that fight comes together, he picks Golovkin to pull it out.
"I haven't seen Triple G fight a fighter like Canelo, [a fighter] of that level. I've seen Triple G destroy everyone that he's fought, but I've never seen him fight someone like Canelo. I like Triple G to win that fight though," Barker said.
