New York - It's not typical that an Olympian making his pro debut would get his own press conference in New York City. But 2016 Irish Olympian Michael Conlan is not the typical Olympian.
Conlan will make his debut - in the main event - on St Patrick's Day, March 17, at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. The plan is to fight him often between the United States and Ireland, according to Top Rank President Todd Duboef, who signed Conlan out of the Olympics.
“We’re probably thinking 5 fights here in the U.S. and 1 in Ireland,” duboef told BoxingScene.com. “We want to give him big U.S. exposure with the big population of Irish people heavily set in the United States, the Northeast and we think it's just the beginning.”
The plan is to make St Patrick’s Day a East Coast tradition for Conlan, in a similar manner to the career strategy that Top Rank has done with Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KO's) and now Felix Verdejo (22-0, 15 KO's) - by showcasing them on the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City.
“We’re not going to be centric to an area but definitely centric to this weekend,” explained duBoef. “St Paddy’s day weekend, kind of like how we did Miguel Cotto on the Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend, and how we do with the Mexican Independence Day Weekend... this will kind of be his day. We’ve worked with the Garden with holding the dates and that will be it moving forward.”
Top Rank has proven in the past that it knows how to turn prospects into stars. For Conlan, the plan is to showcase him throughout the country and especially between Boston and New York.
“I think you have to flip flop between New York and Boston (on St. Patrick’s day) to make the product real. You go to New York, Boston, LA, and Detroit, you have to fill these pockets of interests. Terence Crawford fighting in New York made him a bigger attraction; then when you fight (Viktor) Postol in Vegas, there was more attraction, then he goes back to Omaha and does his best number yet. So you constantly have to circle the globe and grow your fan base," Conlan said.
