Tim Tszyu wasted no time in overpowering Marcos Jesus Cornejo on Saturday.
Australia’s Tszyu, a son of Hall-of-Famer Kostya Tszyu, stopped the Argentinean veteran in the first round of a fight ESPN+ streamed live from Bendigo Stadium in Bendigo, Australia. The 23-year-old Tszyu (11-0, 9 KOs) hurt Cornejo with overhand rights and right uppercuts prior to the stoppage.
Argentina’s Cornejo (19-4, 18 KOs) has lost three straight fights. Tszyu, a junior middleweight prospect, became the third fighter to knock out the 37-year-old Cornejo.
The trouble began when Tszyu cracked Cornejo with an overhand right to the side of his head early in the first round. A staggered Cornejo moved back toward the ropes, where Tszyu landed several vicious right uppercuts that hurt Cornejo and left him defenseless.
Tszyu’s opponent never went down, but Cornejo absorbed a lot of punishment in a short amount of time. Their scheduled 10-round fight was stopped just 2:21 after it began.
