Delante "Tiger" Johnson will look to improve his record to 3-0 on Saturday night when he faces Sebastian Gabriel Chaves (5-3) at Resorts World Event Center on the Las Vegas strip. The fight will be part of the Miguel Berchelt-Jeremia Nakathila undercard that will be streamed on ESPN+.
Johnson, who is a 2020 U.S. Olympian, made his professional debut in November with a 4th round stoppage victory over Antonious Grable. His next fight took place in January and resulted in a shutout points victory over Xavier Madrid.
The 23-year-old welterweight prospect is promoted by Top Rank and trained by head trainer Renard Safo and second assistant Prenice "PJ" Brewer.
Brewer has been pleased with the progress he has made in the gym and revealed that Johnson had top notch sparring for this fight.
"He has been doing good. Sometimes when you go from being an amateur to a pro it's hard to change the style but not for Tiger. He has been getting great work with Terrell Gausha, Vergil Ortiz, and Alexis Rocha. He has learned how to dig deep and is really working hard," Brewer told BoxingScene.com.
At this stage in his career, the main goal is to see improvement. Brewer will be in Terell Gausha's corner in Minnesota on Saturday along with head trainer Manny Robles. Gausha takes on Tim Tszyu in a Showtime televised bout but Brewer will make sure to catch the ESPN+ stream of Johnson's fight.
"I just want him to get better and improve every fight. I won't be there but I will be watching. I want to see what steps he takes in his development. His last opponent was 3-0 and the one before 3-1-1. This one is 5-3. He is not just in there with punching bags. He is fighting real guys that should help his development as he advances," said Brewer.
