While Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn formally announced a slate of fall fights that will take place in the United Kingdom, including the Alexander Povetkin-Dillian Whyte heavyweight rematch on Nov. 21, the schedule for his Matchroom Boxing USA remains a work in progress.
However, multiple sources told BoxingScene that there are three cards in the works that would stream on DAZN -- one in October and two in November -- as follow-ups to the one card Matchroom USA has put on since boxing returned during the coronavirus pandemic. That card was on Aug. 15 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Jessica McCaskill outpointed Cecilia Braekhus in a major upset to take the undisputed women’s welterweight title.
After a break for the rest of August and September, the next show is penciled in for Oct. 23 or Oct. 25 – a Sunday – at the Azteca studios in Mexico City.
The main event is supposed to be junior bantamweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada (40-3, 27 KOs) defending his title against former world titlist and Mexican countryman Carlos Cuadras (39-3-1, 27 KOs). The fight is a rematch of Estrada’s razor-close unanimous decision – 114-113 on all three scorecards – over Cuadras in a 2017 title elimination fight.
The co-feature is due to see junior bantamweight world titlist Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (49-2, 41 KOs), the legendary four-division champion from Nicaragua, defend the 115-pound title took from Kal Yafai in February against an opponent to be determined.
