Thousands of people paid tribute to the memory of Salvador Sanchez in his home town of Santiago Tianguistenco in the State of Mexico, to mark the twenty fifth anniversary of his untimely death at the young age of twenty-three, following a car accident.
The Church of Santa Maria Del Buen Suceso was packed to overflowing capacity, with hundreds standing outside to hear the service given by Father Alejandro Cortez Juarez, giving thanks for Salvador’s life.
Sulio who’s one of Sal’s seven brothers, said the family was deeply touched by the love and loyalty people had shown now, and through the years.
He explained: “Salvador lives forever because of them. It is a time when we sometimes cry, but we also need to be strong, because we know he would like to he here smiling.
“Everyone who ever met my Brother knew he was a down to earth, modest person, who had a wonderful sense of humor. Salvador never judged people. He treated everyone the same, and he earned the respect of people because of who he was as a person.
“I have so many memories of my brother, and all of them are positive.”
The Mexico City based World Boxing Council organized a trip to Sal’s heartland. The guests of honor included former opponents and also friends, Wilfredo Gomez and Juan Laporte. Other Champions included Carlos Zarate and Lupe Pintor.
The day started with a visit to the Instituto Materno Infantil Del Estado de Mexico, in Toluca. It’s a childrens’ Hospital, and the event was organized as part of the WBC Cares Program. The stars signed autographed photos and gave toys to children patients- many of whom are desperately ill.
After the church service and a visit to the cemetery, crowds went to the Town Hall and were treated to lunch and boxing show.
Sulio said of his Brother: “Salvador was a champion inside and outside of the ring. His whole life was a victory.”
