According to a recent report in The Detroit News, former champion Thomas Hearns owes over $448,000 in back tax, according to state and federal record information obtained by the paper. The paper says that Hearns, during the course of his career, made an estimated $40 million by 1991. Hearns was recently talking about a possible return to the ring and his tax troubles might be the reason.
The paper wrote that on March 18, the state filed a $5,147.79 lien against Hearns and his wife for unpaid income taxes. On March 17, the IRS filed a $145,477.62 lien for unpaid income taxes from 2006. On August 2008, the IRS filed a $90,824.59 lien against Hearns for unpaid income taxes from 2007. And last spring, the IRS filed a $206,740 lien against Hearns and his wife for unpaid income taxes from 2006.
Hearns' tax attorney declined to comment on the matter when contacted by the paper.
