Mexico City- Greek heavyweight  Thanasis Michaloudis took a disappointing loss last night at The Auditorio Blackberry in Mexico City when he was stopped by rugged Mexican Vicente Sandez in four rounds.

After a quick start that saw Michaloudis take charge in the fight, everything changed after he landed an awkward right hand to Sandez’ head in the opening round and damaged his hand.  Michaloudis winced with pain when he tried to use the punch, and it became apparent that he had suffered a serious injury.

Michaloudis was out for a year before this bout after undergoing surgery on the same hand, and his trainer said he would be taken to see a specialist on his returned to Honduras Saturday.

“It was excruciating pain when I landed it and just as bad when I blocked punches with it,” said Michaloudis. “I am very disappointed, but am determined, with the doctor’s ok, to come back even stronger and continue my career.”

“The hardest part is disappointing my team and my manager David Haring who all worked so hard to get me a shot at the WBO Latino Heavyweight Title,” said Michaloudis.
