GOLD COAST, Australia – The promising Teremoana Teremoana earned his ninth stoppage victory from his ninth professional contest when he stopped Mexico’s German Garcia Montes inside the opening round.
On the undercard of the IBF cruiserweight title fight between the champion Jai Opetaia and Huseyin Cinkara at the Gold Coast Convention Centre he had promised a more “patient” approach.
If he started with one in mind he regardless soon abandoned it. After jabbing his way into the earliest exchanges he risked greater aggression, and was in turn caught by a right hand.
He responded by prioritising crosses and hooks and therefore neglecting his jab, and in repeatedly hurting his 37-year-old opponent he was also caught by another right – his face by then was red from the first – and maintaining a consistent attack until the quickly tiring Montes was sent to the canvas by a left.
The Mexican fell sufficiently heavily he appeared unlikely to recover. He returned to one knee and considered fighting on, but instead remained stationary, ensuring that he was counted out after two minutes and 37 seconds.
