Teofimo Lopez has always been willing to fight the best of the best….even when it didn’t seem like a great idea.
After a not-so-great showing against Masayoshi Nakatani, Lopez walked straight into a showdown against Richard Commey. Oddsmakers at the time we’re convinced that it was a 50/50 matchup. That is until Lopez took him out in the second round.
In the two biggest fights of his pugilistic life, Lopez was a sizable underdog against both Vasiliy Lomachenko and Josh Taylor. Still, like he always does, he rose to the occasion, beating both on their best days.
Now, even with Lopez vacillating between retirement and continuing to fight, he’s hoping to get his hands on Gervonta Davis. Ultimately, while he would love to be on the other side of the ring against the hard-hitting star, he doubts that his handlers would allow that to happen.
“The reason why the Tank Davis fight won’t happen is obviously they have their mock-up plan on what their gonna do with Gervonta,” Lopez told ProBox TV.
Davis, for a chunk of his career, has been chastised for fighting opponents that many deemed weren’t on his level. For his 2023, the soon-to-be 29-year-old took out a pair of Garcia’s - the first being Hector Luis Garcia and the second being Ryan Garcia.
Lopez though, yawns whenever Davis is brought up in conversations. He undoubtedly has the skills and power. As a youngster, Lopez and Davis shared the ring for several sparring sessions. So all in all, Lopez knows what Davis brings to the table. However, he doesn’t believe Davis is testing himself. But, thanks to his popularity and ability to put butts in seats, Davis can pick and choose whomever he wants. And, according to Lopez, he isn’t choosing the best available names.
“He doesn’t have to go above the B level, he doesn’t have to go below the C level.”
