As was recently reported by several media outlets, top Russian lightweight Denis Shafikov (32-0-1, 17 KOs) struck a deal with Top Rank and is expected to appear on the undercard of Juan Diaz vs. Adailton De Jesus in Laredo, Texas, on Aug. 17. 28-year old “Genghis Khan” Shafikov is rated #4 by both the WBC and the IBF, and also #13 by the WBO. He is considered to be one of the best European lightweights in recent years. Oleg Bogdanov, Shafikov’s representative, added some details for BoxingScene:
“It’s official. A three-year long agreement with Top Rank, possibly the best promotional boxing company in the world, has been reached. Team Shafikov is very glad to work with such titans of boxing as Bob Arum and his team. Denis will be a new Russian secret weapon for Top Rank!”
Shafikov’s previous agreement with Ural Boxing Promotions is also in place – Denis will be co-promoted by the Russian company alongside Top Rank overseas.
“Denis is looking for big fights, but first things first, and we must ensure our American debut will be impressive. We are looking for a capable fighter with a good record, who can give a stern test to Denis”, added Bogdanov.
Which road will be chosen? Shafikov is rated as high as #4 by the WBC. However, the WBC title is vacant following the recent departure of Adrien Broner to a heavier weight class. On the other hand, an interim title will be contested this weekend by GBP-promoted rising puncher Omar Figueroa and Nihito Arakawa of Japan. With an ongoing feud between the Golden Boy and Top Rank, a collision course with Figueroa, a heavy pre-fight favorite over Arakawa, can be derailed. However, the regular title is reportedly vacant at this time. Team Shafikov can have different plans though.
“We shall weigh-in all the options. Maybe we shall follow the IBF or even the WBO path. It will depend on a number of conditions”, says Bogdanov.
IBF champion Miguel Vasquez is being handled by Top Rank as well. He is set for a home rematch with IBF #1 contender Ammeth Diaz, reportedly on Sep. 28, which can open a door for Shafikov to sneak in right after that.
