Mexico's Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51KOs) is hungry to get his shot at the WBC middleweight crown which is being held by Miguel Cotto, who captured the belt on June 7 with a tenth round TKO of Sergio Martinez.
Rubio is the mandatory challenger and the WBC's interim-champion at the weight. He also has an arbitration order that directs the World Boxing Council to order a fight with the current middleweight champ.
Prior to the Cotto-Martinez showdown, the WBC sanctioned the match to go forward with the agreement that Rubio will get the first crack at the winner.
Osvaldo Küchle, promoter of Rubio, is not looking too far ahead. He believes Cotto will move down to 154-pounds and does not expect him to stick around at middleweight.
"We, as the promoters of Rubio, will wait for Cotto. That is the fight we want. To date, we have not been told anything and we will not make any moves until we know what's going to happen with Cotto," Osvaldo Küchle stated.
"We doubt that Cotto will remain at middleweight. We believe that his best [weight is] junior middleweight and he also no problems to make that weight. But first we have to see what he decides to do and what will happen and then we'll see what we have to do."
