Last week an article ran on BoxingScene.com in which undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook's trainer Dominic Ingle told Sky Sports' Toe 2 Toe: "Kell's been permanently fighting final eliminators and now the dream become reality and Kell is well prepared.
"I don't think Porter has been overhyped but up until he fought Devon Alexander he'd been under the radar and he hadn't really impressed me. I've watched him and Keith Thurman a few times and I think Thurman is the better fighter of the two. On paper the Malignaggi and Alexander fights look good but neither of those fighters have got the power that Kell has got."
Brook is scheduled to face Porter, who holds the IBF welterweight crown, this summer with August 9th being the likely date for the fight.
BoxingScene.com recently caught up with Porter's father and trainer Ken to get his reaction to Ingle's comments.
"If you are a trainer with some knowledge and common sense you would expect that any fighter that can get up in that ring can fight and can fight damn good (laughing) - like I am preparing for that fighter (Brook) to fight a good fight and my fighter to fight an excellent fight," said Porter.
In his most recent fights, Porter has faced former champions Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi and has twice faced Julio Diaz. The elder Porter said that he doesn't like to talk too much about what Shawn can do because of the difficulties they have had in securing big fights.
"I don't like to scare anybody before a fight because it causes us problems to get fights, know what I mean? We have a mandatory situation and that is great. Boxing is telling me that 'you guys have to face somebody.' Really? Please. Make somebody get up in the ring with us. We have 24, 25 professional fights and nobody wanted to fight him along the way.
"They don't know how hard it's been for us to get guys to take those fights. They don't know how many times (Paulie) Malignaggi has turned us down since 2010, how many times Zab (Judah) has turned us down, how many times Devon Alexander has turned us down. Nobody knows that kind of stuff. It is hard to get those fights. Now it's a mandatory situation where we just want to get this kid to sign (the contract)," he continued.
Shawn Porter was in New York over the weekend to support his friend Demetrius Andrade who successfully defended his title in an HBO televised fight. Ken said that Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn ran into Shawn and told him that Kell had already agreed to the terms for the fight. Ken said that he was glad to hear that and that he wants to get the fight finalized as soon as possible
.
"Shawn was in New York for the Andrade fight and he said that Eddie Hearn went up to him and was really nice to him and said that they looked forward to fighting him and that Kell had already signed the contract.
"Get us a copy of the contract so that we can make this match," Porter told BoxingScene.com.
