Coming of their victory over Adrien Broner on June 20th, former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter and his father/trainer are looking to go big game hunting in the welterweight division.
"I'd like to see a big name, I don't want to take a step back," said Kenny Porter earlier this week.
"I want to keep going up, your Amir Khan's, your Keith Thurman's and I know this isn't going to happen, your Tim Bradley's, your Manny Pacquiao's since they're on the other side. Those are the names I'd be excited about. Marcos Maidana if they can get his ass away from the dinner table or wherever he's at."
Porter had hoped to face Floyd Mayweather next on September 12th, but it looks like that assignment will be given to Andre Berto. As for a rematch with Broner, Porter had initially balked at that possibility believing that it was a lateral step.
But he says now - "Y'know, the only way that's under consideration is if 'the LBDS' - the little boy down the street (Mayweather) - would like to see his guy get back in there and if he's willing to pay us some step-aside money. If he's willing to pay us to be that co-main event, double, if he's willing to do that - that would definitely be under consideration. I would definitely consider fighting him if they're going to do what I consider the right thing by Shawn as far as making the money right, making it worth our while to take that step back and fight your co-main event, you put the money on the table it would definitely be open for consideration."
And Porter makes it clear that a return bout with Broner would be on their terms.
"Adrien Broner at 144 (pounds) couldn't pull it off, at 147 - and Shawn's at 147 a week before the fight, damn near - I don't think he's got a shot at it."
