WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28KOs) has a full plate for 2013, but the boxer and his team are still hungry to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.
On April 27th in Argentina, Martinez will defend his title against unbeaten British contender Martin Murray. If Martinez wins, he will face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a big fall rematch. Chavez still has to get licensed after failing a drug test following the September loss to Martinez, and he must win a probable return fight in May.
If the plans proceed on schedule, there wont be any time for a Mayweather dance in 2013, but Martinez and his coach are hoping to land the opportunity.
Pablo Sarmiento, Martinez's trainer, said: "The fight I want for Sergio is Mayweather. Right now I think that fight is still a possibility. But first comes Martin Murray in April, and then [in the fall] is a likely rematch with Chavez."
Sarmiento says they are not overlooking Murray, the WBA's interim-champion, and respect him very much.
"Murray is and unbeaten champion and he must be respected rather than talk about what's coming in the future. Every boxer fighters until the last round against Sergio and that will be the same scenario with Murray."
