Sampson Lewkowicz, advisor to WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28KOs) admits a rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32KOs) is much more of a viable fight than a potential meeting with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"The fight with Mayweather is less viable than the rematch with Chavez. We will review our options, but for now there is nothing.....only possibilities. At this moment I can't tell you any specific name but Sergio wants to fight with the best," Lewkowicz said.
Martinez won a twelve round unanimous decision over Chavez Jr. on September 15th. Following the match, Chavez tested positive for marijuana and now faces a suspension of six to twelve months. The date of the rematch will depend on the length of Chavez's suspension. It could take place in May or it could drop down to another September date. Martinez wants to prove that his near fatal twelfth round was nothing more than a mistake.
"If there is a viable offer to fight in Argentina [we'll do it]. I have even heard that Chavez would be willing to go to South America, which demonstrates that he is a great warrior who earned the respect of the entire Martinez team for his bravery. Possibly the match could take place in the first week of May or land in September," said Lewkowicz.
"If there is any doubt, with people believing that Chavez could have knocked him out [in the twelfth round], he wants to demonstrate that he couldn't...that it was only his carelessness."
