Sal LoNano, manager of Paulie Malignaggi, confirmed to BoxingScene that contrary to numerous reports in the media, Paulie did not suffer a broken jaw or a broken nose in his bout with Miguel Cotto. Apparently a blood vessel popped under the right eye of Malignaggi, causing swelling to the right side of his face, and it also caused blood to pour down the back of his throat and through his nose for a majority of the bout.

The steady flow of blood to the back of Malignaggi's throat caused breathing problems during the fight, and he was distracted in several rounds from constantly spitting blood in order to clear his throat.

"Paulie is going to be a future world champion in the division. How many other fighters could last twelve rounds with Miguel Cotto, with blood pouring down the back of their throat? I make no excuses, the champion won the fight, but Paulie is the future of the junior welterweight division," said LoNano.

Malignaggi did need stitches for the cut sustained near his eye, caused by a clash of heads in the first round, but is back in Brooklyn and doing fine. LoNano expects Paulie to rest for a few months and hopefully return to the ring before the end of the year.
