Tony Gonzalez, legal adviser to undefeated featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa, gave his take on the WBA's recent decision to strip his boxer of the "super title" at featherweight. In a statement from the WBA, the sanctioing organization said Gamboa violated their rules by refusing to defend his IBF title in a recent fight with Jorge Solis. The IBF stripped Gamboa for the violation in March.
The WBA's decision to make Gamboa a "super champion" was very odd to begin with, because Chris John is already the "super champion" at featherweight and Jonathan Barros is the WBA's "regular" champion at the weight.
"It certainly is a mess that is not easily understood. We are awaiting a response from the super champion Chris John and hopefully we can address [this] at some point in the remainder of the year. For us, Gamboa is still the champion. I know to Gamboa fans this may seem bad, but the fact is that in the eyes of the world and the television networks - Gamboa is the man to beat in the featherweight. Everything will be clarified in due course," Gonzalez told George Ebro.
