Gaby Penagaricano, legal adviser to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs), denies that there have been any discussions regarding an opponent for his fighter's planned HBO televised return on December 13th at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Several names have been bouncing around the press, but Penagaricano says the entire team will not meet to discuss possible opponents until next week - which is going to be their first meeting regarding that subject.
"[Andy] Lee, Canelo, [Tim] Bradley - these are names that have been mentioned by the press. We have not discussed them. Clearly, I also believe that Lou Dibella [promoter of Lee] is trying to 'bring the sardines closer to the grill' [by floating Lee's name around to the media] to see if his fighter will become the opponent of Miguel. With respect to Bob Arum [promoter of Bradley], he also talks a lot with the media and says many things. But the first actual meeting to coordinate these things will take place next week, seriously," said Penagaricano.
