Chepo Reynoso, manager of WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo' Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs), expects his boxer will face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September. Reynoso says as part of the agreement to fight on the Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero undercard on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Canelo was promised a fight with Mayweather in the fall.
Mayweather just entered a six fight agreement with cable network Showtime, where Canelo has recently been showcased as well.
World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman also expects the fight to happen in the fall.
"Saul has grown a lot in his fights and has proven to be a great champion, defeating every opponent put in front of him. I think the Canelo would give a much better fight against Mayweather than the performance given by [Juan Manuel] Marquez [in 2009]. Canelo is young and has a great future ahead of him and it would be a great fight," Sulaiman said.
Before the Mayweather opportunity, Canelo will potentially face WBA "regular" champion Austin Trout in a big unification on the May date.
