As previously reported - WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (41-0-1, 31KOs), along with manager Eddy Reynoso, had a meeting with Golden Boy Promotions a few weeks ago. They discussed Canelo's return on the date of May 4th. Canelo handed a list with three names - Floyd Mayweather Jr., WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, and former three division beltholder Miguel Cotto.
"Canelo was given three months off [to take a vacation]. He's had an exhausting amount of activity in recent months. [He will] return to work in January," Reynoso said.
Another meeting with Golden Boy is going to take place in January, says Reynoso, where Canelo and his team are hoping the May opponent will be narrowed down.
"In January we will meet again [with Golden Boy], and I hope we're told the final [selection] for Saul's opponent. We decided to wait [before making a final decision] because Martinez is recovering from [the knee] surgery he underwent, and Mayweather has not made a decision on what he wants to do. We also discussed [the option of fighting] Miguel Angel Cotto, but first he has the fight against Austin Trout in December, and we'll see how it goes," Reynoso said.
