There are reports in Spain that former light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo and his camp are upset with the mess involved with the Beibut Shumenov and Juergen Braehmer unification. The boxers were going to unify on Saturday in Kazakhstan. Braehmer felt ill on Tuesday, withdrew and left Kazakhstan for Germany. Shumenov's camp is questioning the legit nature of Braehmer's illness. The German boxer moved forward with his plan to leave the country without notification to Shumenov or his promoter.

The winner of Shumenov-Braehmer was going to be crown the WBA's "super champion" at 175. The regular title would have been ruled vacant. Campillo had planned to fight for that vacant title, likely against Zsolt Erdei, the number two contender in the rankings. The WBA would have ordered the two top contenders to fight for the title.

Campillo's plan will not happen. He took a risk which is not going to pay off. Campillo withdrew from a scheduled fight with Thierry Karl for the vacant European championship, to get the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBA crown. With Braehmer's withdrawal, Shumenov will remain as the regular champion and Campillo will have to rethink his next move.
