On November 23 of last year, fans at the Stechert Arena in Bamberg, Germany, witnessed one of the bigger boxing upsets of 2013, when visiting Australian power puncher Alex Leapai (30-4-3, 24 KOs) drubbed previously undefeated Germany-based Russian contender (WBO #1 at the time of the fight) Denis Boytsov (33-1, 26 KOs) en route to a convincing ten-round unanimous decision.
Despite a hard loss, Denis and his team are both ready to fight on to restore their past glory and to get another chance at the world title.
“Yes, that defeat has bitterly disappointed our team”, confirmed Boytsov’s head coach Karsten Roewer to Sportbox.ru. “However, at that time Denis' mind was missing. He was elsewhere and he couldn’t show his trademark mental toughness and psychological stability in the ring. Hence he was unable to carry out our pre-fight plan, what we had penciled to do in a fight”.
“No matter what Sauerland Event, our promotional company, trusts Denis, supports him and foresees a bright future in front of him. We all know his true abilities and skills. He will have a chance to restore his past conditions. We shall take two or three comeback bouts, and then Team Boytsov will try to seek for yet another title opportunity”.
“Also, Denis has undergone a surgery to repair his bicep. He had his ligaments torn in Leapai fight”, added Roewer.
