BoxingScene.com recently ran a story by Chris Robinson in which Victor Ortiz's trainer, Danny Garcia, said that he would like his fighter to face Devon Alexander next. Alexander recently moved up to welterweight and is looking to make his debut in the division soon.
Garcia told Robinson, “That would be a good fight, because he only has one loss and he’s a former champion. I think that the people would like to see that fight. That way we can show the people that we’re not here to fight guys with four, five losses. We’re fighting guys near the top of the division or guys who are undefeated. Berto, Mayweather, and now Devon Alexander. We’ll show the people that we’re fighting the best and I think we can beat Devon Alexander.”
Alexander's manager and trainer Kevin Cunningham reached out to BoxingScene to respond to Garcia's statements.
"You can tell Danny Garcia that if he wants to get his fighter beat again then he's barking up the right f**king tree," Cunningham told Boxingscene.com.
Team Alexander has been recently campaigning for a fight with Andre Berto and Paulie Malignaggi. Cunningham said that they would have no problem facing Ortiz instead of either of those fighters. The fact that both fighters are signed to Golden Boy makes the fight easier to make.
"Any fighter's name that we mention we are willing to fight. Let's see if they are willing to backup what they are saying when they let shit slip out of their mouth. We are both with Golden Boy so it shouldn't be a hard fight to make."
Alexander and Ortiz both grew up in the midwest and have known each other since their amateur days. Cunningham concluded our conversation with this parting shot.
"They can start some sh*t with Devon if they want to and we are gonna finish it just like Floyd did."
