IBF/WBC junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander's manager and trainer Kevin Cunningham called BoxingScene.com to offer congratulations to WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan and to junior welterweight contender Victor Ortiz for their near flawless performances Saturday night. "Amir Khan looked great. That was a very impressive performance. Victor Ortiz looked good too. It is too bad neither of their opponents won a single round in either fight."
Team Alexander has a HBO date locked up for August 7th in Alexander's hometown of St. Louis. Cunningham hopes an opponent for that date is found soon. "This is what Team Alexnder wants to do, let's fight [Andreas] Kotelnik or [Breidis] Prescott on August 7th. Kotelnik beat Maidana and Prescott knocked Khan out." After his win Khan said he wanted to fight Marcos Maidana. "Khan said he wants Maidana. They can fight each other and let us fight one of the guys that beat them. Kotelnik is a former world champion. Prescott is a very dangerous puncher. You saw what happened to Khan when he fought him."
Team Alexander has ambitious plans for the next year. Cunningham isn't looking for any tune-up fights for his up and coming 23-year-old pupil. "Ryan if things were to go the way we want them to we would fight Kotelnik or Prescott in August, Tim Bradley in the fall and then come back and fight the Khan/Maidana winner in the spring. I think that would be good for the sport of boxing." Tim Bradley is still looking for an opponent for his HBO debut on July 17th.
Kevin Cunningham finished our conversation with what seems to be the motto of Team Alexander in these last few months, "Ryan we want to give the fans good exciting fights. We really want to give the fans the fight they want to see. The fans want to see Devon fight Tim and after last night I am sure they would love to see us fight Khan too."
