A few weeks ago trainer/manager Kevin Cunningham advised BoxingScene.com that his prized pupil Devon Alexander would move up to the welterweight division for his next fight. The former St. Louis policeman has now revealed to BoxingScene his full plan for the former IBF/WBC junior welterweight champion.
First up on his list is Paulie Malignaggi as we previously reported. Cunningham and the New Yorker exchanged verbal jab and taunts over the past few weeks on BoxingScene.
Cunningham told BoxingScene, "The first step in Team Alexander's welterweight plan is to punish Paulie and shut him up."
Cunningham then told us that after Alexander beats Malignaggi he would like his fighter to face former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto.
Berto would have to win his September clash with IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck first. If Berto emerges from that fight victorious, then a showdown with Berto would give Alexander the opportunity to fight for a world title in a second weight class.
"After Paulie, a showdown with Berto would be big in St. Louis or in Atlanta," said Cunningham.
