Jermain Taylor's first big test at middleweight as he took on former middleweight champion William Joppy. Early on in round one, Joppy was making Taylor get frustrated with his very good jab. Taylor came on very strong with power shots at the end to steal the round.
In round two, Joppy was hit with part of the glove to his eye and was unable to clearly see. Taylor took advantage of Joppy's eye problem and landed plenty of good shots take another round.
Joppy kept coming with the jab in rounds three and four, but Taylor was the quicker man as he was outlanding Joppy with big shots. Taylor hit Joppy with a big uppercut in the fourth round.
In round five, Taylor really came on strong with power shots. He landed some big uppercuts, bodyshots and dropped Joppy with a huge hook that had Joppy reeling for the rest of the round.
Rounds six, seven and eight was nothing different. Joppy was too slow and could not get oast the uppercut of Taylor. Taylor landed some big uppercuts that would send Joppy flying.
In round nine, Joppy was frustrated to the point where he lifted Taylor in the air, Taylor punched Joppy in the head three times as he was lifted up. The ref made both guys go in neutral corners and yelled at them to cut the crap out.
In round ten, Joppy had basically given up to even try and win. He just ran, made faces and tried to make gestures to Taylor and the crowd in order to get a reaction. Taylor just put more punishment on him.
Round eleven saw Taylor beat on Joppy some more. Joppy landed two right hands that Taylor ate like they were nothing.
The final round saw Joppy actually try and do some work in the first few seconds but Taylor reminded him of why he was being dominated by hitting him with more powershots, using his speed and accurate punches. Taylor and Joppy almost went at it after the final round was over, but no punches were thrown.
I think that they should take a piece of Joppy's purse for the poor sportsmanship in this fight and his conduct for just making the final few rounds a bore by not even trying to fight and throw punches. He was more interested in clowning around.
All three judges had is scored 120-107.
