A summer often marked by long stretches of not a heck of a lot ended with some fantastic action. Ricky Burns upset of Roman Martinez at 130, and Giovani Segura’s toppling of Ivan Calderon, made for big fights even if they weren’t headlined with big names. With the summer officially not quite closed, Brandon Rios and Anthony Peterson added to a hot run while Wladimir Klitschko simply stayed hot at Heavyweight.
The impact of these results and more force this need for a BoxingScene ratings update reflecting division’s affected in the last few weeks.

Top Ten Contenders
1. Vitali Klitschko (40-2, 38 KO, WBC, 4 Defenses)

8. Alexander Dimitrenko (30-1, 20 KO)
9. Denis Boytsov (27-0, 22 KO)
10. Tony Thompson (34-2, 22 KO)
Rating Notes…Wladimir Klitschko dominated a Peter who didn’t put up much of a fight after the early rounds. Will David Haye or Tomasz Adamek provide the sustained challenge Klitschko has lacked recently?...It would be more than shocking if Vitali found such a challenge from faded former lineal champion Shannon Briggs. That is almost impossible to look forward to…David Haye-Audley Harrison at least has a home turf bragging rights thing but after all the smack, it doesn’t look like Haye is as willing in body as he is in speech just yet…Below Povetkin, only Boytsov is worth more than curiosity at this point…Thompson reenters at number ten after Peter’s loss. Thompson notably gave a good account of himself in a losing challenge of Wladimir before a current three fight win streak.

9. Yoan Pablo Hernandez (22-1, 11 KO)
10. Steve Herelius (20-1-1, 12 KO)
Rating Notes…Hints of a Cruiserweight “Super Six” style clash persist and the sooner the better. The potential for rematches between Steve Cunningham and Huck or Wlodarcyzk is only one reason. The sole missing ingredient in the proposal is a Troy Ross with whom Cunningham has unfinished business…For now, with a year out of the ring, Victor Ramirez exits the ratings…So too does a Matt Godfrey who was thumped by Huck…The streaking Hernandez and Herelius enter in their place…This division is a sleeping giant right now.

9. Dimitri Sartison (27-1, 17 KO, WBA, 1 Defense)
10. Sakio Bika (28-4-2, 19 KO)
Ratings Notes…A lingering eye problem for Mikkel Kessler has put him on the shelf for the better part of a year and obliterated the third round of the Super Six. He remains rated for the time being…Fortunately, an intriguing ‘Final Four’ remains…Carl Froch-Arthur Abraham remains on the slate but difficulties remain the making of Andre Ward-Andre Dirrell…The latter must happen and if it does not it is the height of unprofessionalism…Allan Green is rightly disappointed to have lost his shot at Kessler but, after an anemic outing versus Ward, it will be hard to get anyone to care…Lucian Bute has to like the shortened timeline of the tournament. He’ll be there for the winner and the winner is coming sooner now.

8. Dmitry Pirog (17-0, 14 KO)
9. Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO, WBC interim)
10. Gennady Golovkin (19-0, 16 KO)
Rating Notes…A rematch between Martinez and Williams is THE fight in class and looks like it will happen before the year is out. Williams won a squeaker in a December 2009 classic. Martinez has since defeated Pavlik for the crown…Sturm showed he belongs in line to face the winner with a rust shaking, often dominant win over Lorenzo…The drop from those three is big but could close quickly. A horde of young talent is rising. Pirog leads the way right now but names like Gennady Golovkin and Fernando Guerrero will all factor in the title equation sooner than later…Anthony Mundine’s second straight win at Jr. Middleweight sees him exit the ratings making room for the promising Gennady Golovkin.

8. Ionut Dan (26-1, 14 KO)
9. Said Ouali (27-3, 19 KO)
10. Rafal Jackiewicz (36-9-1, 18 KO)
Ratings Notes…This division has one fight that matters. That fight isn’t happening this year. The hell with everyone involved until it gets done…Luis Collazo exits due to inactivity; Cotto exits with his intent to remain at Jr. Middleweight more clear…Dan enters the ratings based on a controversial decision loss to Aydin; Jackiewicz falls after his loss to Zaveck…Take the superstars out and this is the worst Welterweight has been in a very, very long time.

9. Antonio DeMarco (24-2-1, 17 KO)
10. Paulus Moses (25-1, 17 KO)
Rating Notes…Juan Manuel Marquez beat Juan Diaz earlier, if not as concussively in their rematch and remains the king at Lightweight…Despite having defeated Katsidis in 2008, Diaz has now lost three of four since and could easily have dropped the sole win in the run. Katsidis moves to the top slot and Diaz drops to third…Anthony Peterson exits after being overwhelmed by instant fan favorite Brandon Rios. Rios showed chin, skill, and fire…Robert Guerrero managed to win almost every round and impress no one with a win over the aged Casamayor. Let’s hope the Cuban great calls it a day…Ji Hoon Kim exits and his conqueror, Vazquez, assumes the eight slot off a dominant decision win.

9. Jason Litzau (27-2, 21 KO)
10. Argenis Mendez (17-1, 9 KO)
Ratings Notes…Jr. Lightweight gets a big shakeup at the end of summer…When Mzonke Fana was being derided as a Marco Antonio Barrera foe years ago, would anyone have predicted two belt reigns? He was better than given credit for AND there’s too many belts…Having only heard the buzz, it sounds like Burns’ upset of Martinez was a serious Fight of the Year candidate…Solis continues to edge up and may be the best fighter in class right now…He should be getting that mandatory with Uchiyama any day now right? Bueller?

* Attell’s record streak varies from 18-22 title defenses by source; the CyberBoxingZone records 20 title defenses while 18 is noted in numerous other historical records
Ratings Notes…Juan Manuel Lopez continues to thrill, trading knockdowns before crushing Concepcion. Now it’s a showdown with Marquez, the ultimate dangerous veteran. That’s drool worthy…Chris John is hurt. Again. Is the veteran at the point where his body just can’t make it anymore?...Gamboa gets his first top ten win but doesn’t move up right away as he showed how far he’s yet to go. He’s now a WBA ‘Super’ champ. So is John. The WBA is ridiculous….No one wants to fight Caballero yet. It’s likely to stay that way a bit longer…Featherweight has seen its ceiling raised higher with room yet to grow.

Ratings Notes…A division that could be good if the best were fighting each other, the fact is for now they are not…with one exception…as much as sanctioning bodies are and should be derided, Nishioka-Munroe is an excellent mandatory match…Mathebula slips after a surprising upset loss. Mathebula gave Celestino Caballero a tough go in 2009.

* Canto, a WBC champion, was regarded by some, including Ring Magazine, as lineal champ as early as 1975 for defeating Shoji Oguma; became clear champion when twice defended against foe Betulio Gonzalez became WBA champ on 08/13/1978
Ratings Notes…Wonjongkam may be looking at a fifth fight with Naito if Koki Kameda is serious about moving up in weight rather than trying to chase a rematch. A mandatory with former Jr. Flyweight titlist Edgar Sosa may come before anything else. That could be a good fight…Wonjongkam could also conceivably do business with brother Daiki and give Flyweight its first unification contest in decades. A mandatory with former Jr. Flyweight titlist Edgar Sosa could also happen…In the meantime, the champ is taking some easy ones while Daiki is likely to have to face Sakata, a former WBA titlist, in the fall…Miranda won a belt after falling short in key eliminators and title tries previously (including losses to Wonjongkam and Mthalane in 2009). He filled the slot left behind by the vacating Omar Narvaez; the Argentine left 112 one short of tying the general consecutive title defense record at Flyweight…Dapudong holds a WBC “Silver” belt which is a glossier name for interim beltholder. Whatever.

Ratings Notes…Segura’s thrilling knockout of Ivan Calderon means a new World Champion and a strong Fight of the Year candidate. A rematch is likely…Further unification for Segura would be welcome as well, especially if it could come with fellow Mexican warrior Omar Nino…Reveco is way overdue for his mandatory too, meaning Segura has no shortage of compelling challengers, but Reveco must survive a challenge from the rising Roman Gonzalez.
