Concerning the postponement of the Sept. 15 clash between WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (47-3-1, 35 KOs) and challenger Rocky Juarez (27-3, 19 KOs), which got canceled due to an infection on Marquez's right hand, WBC president José Sulaimán said that a doctor’s note has been accepted on behalf of Marquez and the bout will be re-scheduled to November.
The set date is November 3, which conflicts with the HBO televised event featuring Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler in a super middleweight unification bout from England. No pay-per-view here, the fight will be televised on rival network Showtime. IBF featherweight champ Robert Guerrero vs. Martin Honorio, previously scheduled for the original Sept date, is said to be the co-feature.
Sulaimán stressed that tending to the injury rather than trying to fight with it, showed a strong sense of responsibility to the public.
He also stressed: “There’s no question about it. Juan Manuel Marquez wanted this fight against Rocky Juarez. It was very unfortunate, but they will have the opportunity in November.”
Not revealing injuries and going into bouts carrying them, seldom benefits fighters. Don Jose recalls that Julio Cesar Chavez did this, on a couple of occasions, unknown to anyone at the time. He said: “When Julio Cesar Chavez fought Pernell Whittaker he had a serious injury, probably a fracture in his left hand. But Julio would not agree to postpone that fight.
“When he fought Frankie Randall at the opening of the MGM, he was in terrible condition as regards to his knees, and he did not want to postpone that fight. That’s the way that Julio Cesar Chavez was.”
