WBC President Jose Sulaiman has stated that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could easily get the opportunity for a mandatory shot at the winner of the Sergio Martinez-Paul Williams rematch, which takes place on November 20 in Atlantic City. Chavez is the WBC's silver champion at the weight. He defends that interim-type title on December 4 against Alfonso Gomez.
Beyond Gomez, Chavez may decided to move down in weight to challenge Miguel Cotto for his WBA junior middleweight title in 2011. If the Cotto fight does not proceed, Sulaiman says Chavez is welcome to fight for the WBC title.
"Julio is ready to fight for a world championship. He is now ranked as the number one middleweight in the World Boxing Council (WBC) and hopefully we will surprise him soon [with a mandatory shot]. If he doesn't fight with Cotto, he is still in our rankings," Sulaiman said.
