On Monday there were rumblings that WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) received an offer to make a defense against living legend Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) .
Stevenson's promoter, Yvon Michel, has denied the information. He says no offer has been presented for such a fight and nobody has approached him to engage in negotiations for the fight. The only talk that he's heard about the match, is an executive from the Bell Centre recently asking for his thoughts on the fight.
"A person from the Bell Centre asked me if there was any interest in a fight between Adonis and Hopkins. We never received an offer and no steps have been taken to go in this direction," Michel told The Montreal Journal.
Hopkins, 51-years-old, is looking to have one more fight before he retires and he hopes the final outing has a world title involved. The former unifified middleweight and light heavyweight champion has been inactive since losing a twelve round decision to current IBF/WBA/WBO champion Sergey Kovalev in November 2014.
Stevenson and Hopkins were in serious discussions to face each other in 2014. Hopkins felt Stevenson and his adviser, Al Haymon, were dragging their feet and instead 'The Alien' went in another direction and finalized a deal for Kovalev. Because of his two high profile fights in Canada with Jean Pascal, Hopkins is one of the better known fighters in the country and a fight with Stevenson, even at this point, would be bigger than Stevenson's other options outside of Kovalev, Pascal or Lucian Bute.
