The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that undefeated Paul Spadafora (39-0-1, 15KOs) is on his way to regaining his boxing license in order to restart his boxing career.
The State athletic commissionerin Pennsylvania have agreed to restore his boxing license in order to support his family.
Once Spadafora passes the necessary medical tests, he can regain his license in as little as ten days. Spadafora stated that he can be ready to make a return to the ring in a month.
The 30-year-old Spadafora, a former lightweight champion, is likely to compete at 140 or 147 pounds.
As most recall, Spadafora had numerous legal battles that stemmed from his erratic behavior outside of the ring. Spadafora's last legal battle appeared to many as the final nail in his boxing career. A drunk Spadafora became enraged with his girlfriend, Nadin Russo, over causing two flat tires on his hummer and shot her.
Spadafora plead guilty to the shooting in February of 2005. He served six months in a correctional boot camp, and seven months in prison. Spadafora was paroled two months ago.
"We're agreed that we're going to give him back his license," Commissioner Andrew DePaolo of Green Tree said. "If he doesn't be a good boy and breaks his parole, we'll take it away. A boxing license will give him the opportunity to support himself and his children, Mr. DePaolo said. If we take away the chance for him to fight, how's he going to make a living?"
