Boxing Scene has been reliably informed that heavyweight free agent Dereck Chisora (22-5, 14 KOs) has signed a promotional agreement with German promoters, Sauerland.
The announcement is expected on Twitter later tonight with the @SauerlandBros feed saying: “Gonna raise a few eyebrows to put it mildly.”
Chisora, 31, a former British, Commonwealth and European heavyweight champion was released from his contract by previous promoter Frank Warren earlier this month. The brief statement said: “Queensbury Promotions will no longer be promoting or working with Dereck Chisora.” Warren declined to comment further when ‘Scene contacted him not long after.
Whatever caused the contract termination it has been clear for some time that, performance wise, the sometimes controversial Brit has been treading water. His defeat to Tyson Fury last November came after his corner pulled him out at the end of the 10th round and in September his 10-round points decision over Marcelo Luiz Nascimento was painful viewing to say the least.
Chisora will become the second British heavyweight to join Sauerland after David Price was added to their stable in November 2013. With Price’s career up in the air right now after another catastrophic loss, this time to European champion Erkan Teper back in July, the signing of Chisora may well breathe life into a fight with the Liverpudlian that was mooted a few years ago.
Sauerland’s British association rolls on with a show in London, headlined by George Groves, on January 30 at the city’s Copper Box venue. Chisora’s debut for Kalle and Nisse Sauerland may well come on that particular show, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK.
