Sonny Bill Williams says a fight with Cronulla Sharks and NSW hardman Paul Gallen is on the cards after the cross-code star beat American battler Chauncy Welliver in Sydney last week.
Williams took his pro record to 7-0 after a comfortable victory over Welliver, in a fight that lacked fireworks but was at least without controversy after the Kiwi's last win against South Africa's Frans Botha was clouded in doubt.
Gallen beat Randall Rayment over four rounds earlier in the night and immediately reiterated his desire to fight the Chiefs and All Blacks centre.
Williams, who will join his Super Rugby team-mates for pre-season training this week, said stepping into the ring with Gallen was a definite possibility.
"I've got a lot of respect for Gal and he handled himself really well in the ring," Williams said. "He definitely looks like he punches hard. I don't know, he's expressed a desire too and I have also. God willing we get through our seasons unscathed and we're both here next year facing off."
Williams, 30kg lighter and in far superior condition than his opponent, took the eight-round bout 80-72 80-72 79-73.
He said he learned from his last outing against Botha nearly two years ago, amid allegations about the supposed length of the fight.
"Obviously I like to stay on my toes but I knew from experience, last fight with Botha, I got pretty tired after staying on my toes the whole fight," he said. "So I knew I had to stay in close, catch a few punches."
Fellow All Black Liam Messam beat Rhys Sullivan.
