Ruslan Provodnikov came in a healthy 139lbs healthy and ready for his weight with Lucas Matthysse. Missing from his corner will be trainer Freddie Roach, who remained in California to work with Manny Pacquiao in preparations for his fight with Floyd Mayweather. In is his protégé Marvin Somodio. Last time Somodio was the head trainer in Provodnikov’s corner, he upset Mike Alvarado in Colorado.
Although Somodio is accustomed to leading the corner, he says he’s always a little nervous, especially in a big fight.
“It’s an honor but at the same time I’m a little bit worried because it’s a big fight,” Somodio told Boxingscene.com “This is a big responsibility and Freddie’s not here so it’s a lot on me. This is going to be my third time as the head guy and I’m excited not only because I’ll be in the corner but because it’s a great fight.”
Somodio’s relationship began when Provodnikov first came to the Wild Card gym and he feels they both have an understanding of each other.
“I’ve been working with Ruslan since the first time I met him,” Somodio said. “This is the 3rd time that I’m going to be in charge of his corner. Our relationship is a trainer and fighter is very good. We understand what we want from each other. Of course Freddie is always with us even when he’s not.”
Many say Lucas Matthysse is the biggest puncher Provodnikov has ever faced and that because of their styles, we are looking at one of the best fights to be made on paper this year. Somodio agrees and feels that Matthysse is worth adversary.
“Matthysse is a tremendous fighter with tremendous power. He’s a good boxer also. We are here because we are ready to win. I think this fight will go 12 and live it up everything that’s been said about it.”
