Former world title challenging heavyweight Matt Skelton has no plans to slow down anytime soon, despite the fact that the former K1 fighter is now well into his 46th year.
The one-time British, Commonwealth and European champion, who lost his only world title challenge to Ruslan Chagaev in 2008, returns to the ring next month to headline his hometown for the first time and is as excited as ever about being involved in the sport.
“I’ve always said to myself that come the time when I don’t enjoy going into the gym and training then that’s when I should call it a day,” Skelton explained to bedfordshire-news.co.uk.
“I genuinely still enjoy it, I enjoy the buzz and I enjoy being pushed and setting myself goals.
“The facts that come into it are when you go for your medicals every year and whether you are going to pass it due to eyesight.
“So, touch wood, things will be fine and as long as I can pass my medicals then I’ll continue to fight until I’ve had enough.”
Skelton returns at the Corn Exchange on May 18th in what will be his 33rd professional contest in just under ten years and could be on the verge of a British title shot with one or two more victories.
