Commonwealth (British Empire) heavyweight champ Matt Skelton (21-1, 18KOs) wants to prove the experts wrong when he challenges WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev (23-0-1, 17KOs) on Jan. 19 in Dusseldorf. Skelton has been listed as a 6-1 underdog.
Speaking with Bedford Today, Skelton vowed to bring Chagaev's title back to the UK.
"One thing I can assure you is that my commitment and heart for this fight will never be in doubt and I will do everything in my power to bring that world title back to the UK," Skelton said. "I'm going to do it for me, my family, my friends, my team and the unbelievable UK supporters that have made my journey an inspirational one thus far."
Skelton has dreamed of a world title shot for his entire career. He knows Chagaev is probably his last chance for a major title shot. He plans to make the best of it.
"A shot at a world title has always been my dream and for that dream to finally come true is a fantastic feeling," Skelton said. "But that initial excitement has now been put aside. I'm focused, up for it, and so grateful for the chance. Celebrating before the event means nothing. I know Chagaev is a very tough and technically aware opponent and I know that I need to be at my best to stand a chance. This is a chance I will grasp with both hands and if destiny hands me the ultimate prize, then and only then will I celebrate."
