A measure of revenge was gained by Matt Skelton as he snatched the Commonwealth heavyweight title from Danny Williams by way of a unanimous decision victory at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. The scoreds were 117-112, 117-112 and 115-114. In their first meeting, Williams wrecked the undefeated record of Skelton by getting the nod by split decision.

As was the case in their first meeting, there was blood, fouls and high stakes drama throughout the fight. During the eight round, the constant fouling by both men in the fight forced the referee to threaten both of them with a double-disqualification.

By The last round, both fighters appeared spent, but Skelton had built a considerable lead on the cards and finished the final stanze with little trouble.

Prior to the bout, it was reported that promoter Frank Warren was already in talks to have the winner face WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev before the end of the year in London. Skelton noted after the fight that he may not be the best the heavyweight division has to offer, but he still thinks he has enough to beat the seven-foot goliath.

"I probably haven't got the finesse of some of those fighters out there but believe I can do it (beat Valuev)," Skelton said.
