Shortly after posting Richard Schaefer's comments regarding Alfredo Angulo's refusal to fight Erislandy Lara, BoxingScene.com received an angry call from Angulo's promoter Gary Shaw. Speaking with BoxingScene on Tuesday, Schaefer, the CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, said he tried his best to match Lara with Angulo, but the Mexican slugger had no interest in the fight.
Shaw took offense to Schaefer's comments. He doesn't deny Angulo's lack of interest in the fight. According to Shaw, Lara is not at the level, in terms of exposure and name value, to interest Angulo. Shaw took aim at Schaefer over the failed negotiations to match WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley against some of the top 140-pounders under the Golden Boy banner.
"I read Schaefer's article with great interest because he's trying to push a guy with nine fights, that nobody knows, even if you put him on Hollywood and Vine, or on Broadway and 42nd street. Even the hardcore fighters wouldn't recognize him. Push him against a guy like Alfredo Angulo, who is known and been on TV several times. So I suggest to Richard to spend more time putting together the fights that people actually want to see, like Timothy Bradley vs. Amir Khan, like Timothy Bradley vs. Marcos Maidana, like Timothy Bradley vs. Victor Ortiz," Shaw told BoxingScene.com.
"Instead of hiding those fighters, and calling out Angulo, I suggest he spend more time putting on fights that the fans wants to see, and stop hiding the fighters people know or only putting them against other Golden Boy fighters. Come on Richard, take your fighters out to fight other fighters [not with Golden Boy]. He's only trying to give me the guys that nobody knows, instead of the guys that everybody knows."
While Shaw took aim at Schaefer, he praised Top Rank CEO Bob Arum for his willingness to match unbeaten puncher Edwin Valero against Bradley.
"I give credit to Bob Arum. He called immediately after the [DeMarco] fight was over and said 'let's do Valero vs. Bradley.' That's what promoters do. My guy [Alfredo Angulo] is already fighting, but the following guys are available, Cory Spinks, Sergiy Dzinziruk, Kermit Cintron, Paul Williams, Vanes Martirosyan and Verno Phillips. All of these fighters, as of this date, have no signed contracts to fight. If you [Schaefer] need any other help in matchmaking, feel free to call me or call me at home in the evening."
